Common Foot Problems: Heel Spurs
The heel bone is the largest bone in the foot and absorbs the most shock and pressure. A heel spur, or bony protrusion, develops as an abnormal growth of the heel bone from calcium deposits formed when the plantar fascia, a broad band of fibrous tissue located along the bottom surface of the foot that runs from the heel to the forefoot, pulls away from the heel area. Heel spurs can cause extreme pain in the rear foot, especially while standing or walking.
The root cause of heel spurs is the over stretching or tearing of the plantar fascia, which is usually the result of over-pronation or tight calf muscles. People with flat feet or unusually high arches can develop heel spurs. There is a significantly higher incidence of heel spurs due to wearing improper footwear without adequate support on a regular basis.
When the Shoe Fits will work with you and your foot doctor to develop the proper treatment of heel spurs. Common treatments include wearing shoes with inserts that have better support. An orthotic with rear foot posting and longitudinal arch support can be an effective device to allow the condition to heal.
